Prevention of Global Warming 01

≪Greenhouse gas emissions and our basic policy to counter these gases
Of the greenhouse gas emissions contributing to global warming, power utilities are particularly responsible for CO2 (carbon dioxide) emitted from the burning of fossil fuels in thermal power generation. In Japan, one quarter of all CO2 emissions come from the electric power industry. Therefore, reducing CO2 emissions is the most important countermeasure for electric power companies to help combat the effects of global warming. At Kyushu Electric, progress in this direction is being made both at the electricity supply and demand sides.

[Environmental measures at the electricity supply side]
Kyushu Electric promotes electricity generation methods that emit no CO2 such as nuclear power generation and the harnessing of new energy sources, and uses fossil fuels with comparatively low emissions, such as LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) wherever possible. Such efforts resulted in the reduction of CO2 emissions intensity (end use electricity) to 0.305kg-CO2/kWh in fiscal 1999, a 6% improvement over the previous year and a 32% reduction compared to fiscal 1990 emissions.

[Environmental measures at the electricity demand side]

Kyushu Electric helps customers save energy by providing information and consulting services, thus contributing to overall CO2 emission reductions at the demand side.

As a result of efforts made by the electricity supply and demand sides as described above, the amount of CO2 emissions for fiscal 1999 fell to 22.3 million tons. This figure is 900,000 tons less than the previous year, or a 4% overall improvement, and also marks an 11% improvement from that of fiscal 1990, with 2.7 million tons lower emissions. Since 1990, the increase of CO2 emissions has been kept at a lower rate than the increase of power consumption.
