Industrial Waste

The industrial waste generated from Kyushu Electric's operations includes coal ash produced from coal burning, gypsum from desulfurization facilities in thermal power plants, scrap metal, sludge and others.

Coal ash accounted for 75% of the total of 440,000 tons of industrial waste generated in fiscal 1999. By fiscal 1998, only about 40% of the industrial waste had been recycled and reused. This was because the recycling rate of coal ash, the bulk of the waste, was relatively low.

The full operation of a selective collection device in fiscal 1999 increased the coal ash collection rate drastically, improving the rate not only of coal ash recycling but of industrial waste as a whole.

Kyushu Electric aims to further improve the recycling rate up to 90% for all industrial waste in the near future.
