International Cooperation

[Participation in the World Bank PCF]
The World Bank has proposed the establishment of a Prototype Carbon Fund (PCF) as an international initiative to reduce greenhouse gases. Kyushu Electric decided to join the fund in December 1999.

The PCF collects money from contributors (countries or companies) and invests the money in projects promote reduction of greenhouse gases in developing countries and transition economies. The amount of greenhouse gases reduced will be allocated to the contributors.

Officially inaugurated on January 18, 1999, funds from the PCF will be invested between April 2000 and December 2012.

[Afforestation support in the Union of Myanmar]
Kyushu Electric decided to support an experimental planting in a reforestation project conducted by a Japanese NGOs in the Union of Myanmar.

In Myanmar, forest slashing-and-burning and cutting trees for everyday fuel needs by local people has triggered the destruction of forests. Further, ruined farmlands and reduced water levels in lakes caused by an influx of soil have increased, resulting in lower operation of hydroelectric power plants. The project that Kyushu Electric is supporting aims to conduct afforestation on ruined land and to promote environmental awareness in Myanmar.
