Kyushu Electric Power announces extension of construction period of Specialized Safety Facility (Genkai Nuclear Power Station Units No.3 and No.4)

 Kyushu Electric Power announced today the decision made at the board meeting that the construction period of the Specialized Safety Facility ("SSF") has been extended, at Genkai Nuclear Power Station Units No.3 and No.4.
 It was previously communicated that the SSF at the Genkai Nuclear power station would start operation in 2022. However, a fire broke out at the SSF construction site, which suspended the construction work for about three months as a thorough investigation was conducted to the cause and measures were undertaken to prevent recurrence.
 In this context, a detailed review of the construction schedule has been performed to estimate the impact and the Board of Directors have decided to adjust the construction schedule of Unit 3 and Unit 4.

1. Reasons for the construction of SSF

 The construction of SSF is required in accordance with (1)-(iv), Article 43-3-6 in 'Act on the Regulation of Nuclear Source Material, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors'.

2. Construction Outline of SSF

(1) Location

Imamura, Genkai Town, Higashimatsuura District, Saga Prefecture, Japan

(2) Capital

approx. 240 billion yen

(3) Overviews of facilities

i. water storage tanks and water injection pumps
ii. filtered venting
iii.nitrogen cylinder
iv. power generator
v. emergency control room

(4) Construction Period

Resume operation of Unit No. 3 is now expected in January 2023
Resume operation of Unit No. 4 is now expected in February 2023

*Deadline for the installation of SSF as set by NRA:
Deadline for Unit No.3 is August 24, 2022
Deadline for Unit No.4 is September 13, 2022

3. Future Outlook

 We will continue to steadily proceed with the SSF construction work, giving top priority to safety. In addition, should any matter arise which needs to be disclosed, including the impact on our business performance, we will promptly announce the information in a timely manner.
