Decision of decommissioning of the Genkai Nuclear Power Unit No.2 |
We hereby announce that as of today, the Board of Kyushu Electric Co., Ltd. has decided to decommission the Genkai Nuclear Power Unit No.2. Genkai No.2 will reach the end of its operation period in March 2021. To expand the operating period, an application needs to be submitted before the deadline of March 31, 2020, as based on the procedures of regulatory approval of an extension. In setting Specific Safety Facilities for adapting to the new regulatory standards, there was the peculiar technological restriction about ensuring space. The prospects for its output and remaining commercial operation period, has led to the decision not to commence the approval procedure on extension of the operating period for Genkai No.2. In March 1981, Genkai No.2 had started operation and for a long period of time it played an important role in providing a stable power supply and in maintaining a low electricity rate, and thus a great contribution to the development of Kyushu's economy. This would not have been possible without the understanding and cooperation of the residents of Genkai-cho, Saga Prefecture and other parties. We would like to thank them once again for their support. From now on, we will go through various procedures regarding the decommissioning of Genkai No.2. We will proceed with the steps of decommissioning of Genkai No.1 and No.2. During the decommissioning of Genkai No.1 and 2, we will place the highest priority on safety and we will keep in close communication with neighboring residents and members of local communities as we have done in the past. We would like to ask for your continued understanding and support. As a result of this decision, our operational nuclear power will be 4 units of Genkai No.3,4 and Sendai No.1,2. However, nuclear energy is regarded as an important base load power source in the government's Strategic Energy Plan and in view of such factors as energy security and preventing groval warming, we aim to continue the generation of 4 nuclear units while placing the highest priority on ensuring safety and security.
